Information about the course:

This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to communicate in the workplace within the Resources and Infrastructure Industries.

This unit is appropriate for those working in operational roles.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.


There are no prerequisites for this course.

Target audience:

Those who are working in a mine rescue unit working as part of an Emergency Rescue Team.

Award issued:

Students who successfully complete this nationally recognised training will be awarded the statement of attainment for: 

  • RIICOM201D Communicate in the workplace

Course duration:

  • Option 1 Full course: 14 hours face-to-face training
  • Option 2 Flexible delivery: 10 hours face-to-face training
  • Option 3 Refresher course: 6 hours face-to-face training

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

  • locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures
  • demonstrates completion of communicating in the work place that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:
  1. identifying communication strategies and systems
  2. operating communications systems and equipment to convey meaning to others
  3. communicating clearly and promptly to others to convey information and make meaning
  4. listening carefully to instructions and information
  5. participating in group discussions and engage with group members respectfully
  6. asking questions to clarify meaning
  7. communicating concisely both written and verbally
  8. interpreting other communications such as flags, lights, signs, bells and whistles
  9. identifying and reporting communication faults and deficiencies
  10. using approved and preparing written documentation that communicates meaning to others

 Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of communicating in the workplace through:

  • relevant standards and site procedures
  • worksite communication system components, applications and limitations
  • procedures and safety requirements of communication equipment and systems
  • common faults in communication equipment/systems
  • emergency communication procedures
  • record maintenance
