Course set for First aid, Asthma and Anaphylaxis


Successful completion of this course will provide participants with the skills and knowledge and most importantly, confidence, to provide first aid treatment to any person suffering a sudden illness or injury, such as asthma or anaphylaxis.  This includes the skills to preserve life, prevent the condition from worsening, and promote recovery.  It includes initial intervention in a casualty with a serious condition until the arrival of medical assistance, such as performing CPR while awaiting an ambulance, as well as the complete treatment of other less serious conditions, such as applying water for burns, or assisting someone choking.

Participants will go further into the knowledge and skills to develop an asthma management plan and provide asthma related first aid interventions in the workplace.

The course is delivered in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines and applies to all workers or members of the community who may be required to provide first aid and CPR in the event of an emergency and manage asthma and anaphylaxis in the workplace.

Satisfactorily completing all requirement of this course provides the student with the ability to develop risk management and risk minimisation strategies for individuals diagnosed at risk of asthma and/or anaphylaxis in the workplace. This includes the development and implementation of pre-emergency risk assessment/management and the development and implementation of individual asthma and/or anaphylaxis management plans.

This course provides nationally recognised training for workers, or nominated workplace first aiders, from any industry sector and addresses the provision of care to adults and/or children in the workplace who are diagnosed as being at risk of asthma and/or anaphylaxis or displaying signs/symptoms of asthma and/or anaphylaxis.

** There are specific industries that require additional training such as childcare workers, schoolteachers and other related industries.

Important information prior to enrolment

+ Course Delivery

This course will be delivered in the workplace or at an Allens Training Pty Ltd RTO or Third party facility. Online learning with face to face assessment.

+ Entry Requirements

Participants must be able to read and comprehend the ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis, request appropriate emergency assistance at the scene of the incident and complete incident reports. Participants must have the physical capacity to:

  • perform 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor.
  • be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration such as assisting a casualty into the correct position and administering medication.

+ Course Duration

  • Face to Face – 9 hours (minimum) full face to face course.
  • Blended delivery – 7 hours (minimum) face to face course with the addition of 2 hour self-paced learning to be completed prior to attending the face to face course.
  • Online delivery with face to face Practical assessment – self paced online learning with a scheduled 40-minute face to face practical assessment.
  • Refresher training – 7 hours (minimum) face to face course – conditions apply for this option, for example, you will need to provide previous current certificates.

+ Assessment Requirements

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks. These are detailed in the section following.

+ Certificate Renewal Requirements

HLTAID003 Provide first aid unit must be updated every three (3) years from the date of completion. The Statement of Attainment may specify additional requirements to keep it valid such as the CPR component is to be updated and completed every twelve (12) months to keep it current in HLTAID011 Provide first aid. It is recommended that the 22556VIC Course in the management of asthma risks and emergencies in the workplace and 22578VIC Course in first aid management of anaphylaxis, be renewed every 36 months in line with industry standards. There is no industry recommended renewal identified on the certificate, employers are recommended to consult with stakeholders to identify appropriate training periods.

What happens at the course?

+ Assessment Activities

Assessments conducted during face-to-face training session(s) include:

  • Performance tasks - The assessor must observe the following performance tasks:

    • Perform CPR on an infant
    • Administer asthma medication without a spacer
    • Administer the adrenaline autoinjector for anaphylaxis
    • First aid for allergic reaction and anaphylaxis
    • Choking with airway obstruction
    • Unconscious breathing casualty
    • Bleeding and shock
    • Snake or funnel web spider bite
    • Sprains and fractures
  • Practical scenarios - The assessor must observe the following

  • practical scenario:

    • Perform CPR on an adult
    • Breathing difficulties – Asthma
  • Documentation - The student must complete the following to the appropriate standard:

    • First aid/Incident report form
    • Complete a risk assessment for asthma and anaphylaxis and an
    • individual management plan for a child with asthma and anaphylaxis based on a case study and information provided
    • Individual asthma and anaphylaxis management plan for a child, which includes a communication plan to raise awareness of the child’s allergies, triggers and their management plan
  • Theory assessment - A written assessment consisting of short answer and multiple-choice questions. The student must complete all assessment questions.
